SHIMIZU KENYA

Kenya Simizu is a stalwart of our exhibitions, releasing a new work for each show. He is quite stable as an artist and is certainly popular at exhibitions. He was also featured recently in the special Japanese artist edition of “The Art of Men” magazine. His new artwork is a complex one, taking us to a new eroticized world of the samurai.

- GOH MISHIMA - Goh Mishima had a traditional upbringing, was inducted into the army at age 18 and had his first homosexual encounter with another soldier. In 1972, Barazoku, Japan's first gay magazine, began publication. Mishima contributed photographs and illustrations, but soon became disenchanted with the magazine's "pretty boy" image and created his own publication, Sabu. It was named for his favorite bartender and promoted a far more masculine and sexually aggressive male image. Mishima did all its cover art. As his reputation grew the artist produced great numbers of drawings from his small Meguro district apartment where he died of cirrhosis of the liver in 1988.
